What I’ve Learned About My Writing So Far in 2022
I don’t know about you all but sometimes it’s hard as a writer to walk the tight-rope of writing mini/snack-able pieces vs writing longer form.
Since reading an amazing piece from Ella Heart about writing shorter articles my minds eye has been opened.
It’s kinda weird how being creatures of habit sometimes closes out mind off to simple things that are right in front of us. I tend to write longer pieces because my “career” in writing started with investigative journalism around entrepreneurs and startups in the area.
So I’m trained to find the unique angles and really do research and investigation around them.
Of course there’s nothing wrong with that but, as a result, I often forget that sometimes the most meaningful stories can be short, personal learnings, challenges, and/or successes.
I’m learning to write more about every day life or about things I feel in the moment. It’s been a pretty cool journey to see how different of a style it is vs the editorial and research heavy writing I’ve really gotten use to.
I’ve also realized that, because of the length of articles I’m used to writing (aka longer), I’d often have paralysis because I didn’t want to venture into the depth of research.
Truthfully this kept me from writing at all sometimes. Now, when I have an idea or feeling, it’s a lot easier for me to jot my thoughts down on the go and feel good about the points I’m making or possible impact.
